Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - Three unanswered third-period goals were the difference for the Hamilton Bulldogs (29-32-1-4) on Friday evening in San Antonio, Texas, as they matched their season high in offensive output in a 6-3 victory over the San Antonio Rampage (27-31-3-6) at AT&T Center.
San Antonio got on the board first just over three minutes into the opening frame when defenceman Josh McFadden hit forward Wade Megan with a perfect cross-ice pass that Megan tapped past Hamilton goaltender Devan Dubnyk right at the edge of the crease. Forward Bobby Butler had a second assist on the play.
At 11:40 of the first period, with Hamilton on the power play, Bulldogs defenceman Nathan Beaulieu fired a point shot toward the Rampage goal which was redirected by forward Maxime Macenauer to tie the game, 1-1. Defenceman Greg Pateryn collected a second assist on Macenauer's seventh goal of the season.
Less than four minutes later, Hamilton forward Sven Andrighetto circled the offensive zone, stepped into the high slot and ripped a wrist shot past San Antonio goaltender Michael Houser to make it 2-1 Hamilton. Forward Christian Thomas and Pateryn had assists on Andrighetto's 15th goal of the season.
Just under seven minutes into the second period, Rampage forward Logan Shaw stripped Beaulieu of the puck at San Antonio's defensive blue line, then skated in on a shorthanded breakaway where he was stopped by Dubnyk, but defenceman Matt Gilroy potted the rebound to tie the game at two.
With less than five minutes to play in the second period, the 'Dogs regained the lead when forward Christian Thomas fired a shot on net, then Macenauer jumped on the rebound for his eighth goal of the season.
Fifty-two seconds into the third period, San Antonio tied things at 3-3 when forward Jared Gomes ripped a shot through a crowd and past Dubnyk. Forwards Greg Rallo and Jed Ortmeyer had assists on the play.
That was as close as the Rampage would get, however. Less than two minutes later, Pateryn unleashed a slap shot from the point past Houser to regain the lead for the Bulldogs, 4-3, with assists from forwards Jordan Owens and Nick Tarnasky. The goal was Pateryn's 12th of the season.
At 6:15 of the third period, Thomas took a perfect pass from Macenauer from behind the net and popped his 10th goal of the season past a sprawled-out Houser for an insurance marker. Andrighetto had a second assist on the sequence.
Owens added an empty-net goal for Hamilton with 43 seconds to play make it a 6-3 game with his first tally as a Bulldog. Beaulieu had the only assist.
Dubnyk made 20 saves on 23 shots in the Bulldogs net in the win. Houser stopped 44 of 49 shots for the Rampage in the loss.
Hamilton went 1-for-4 on the power play, while San Antonio went 0-for-3.
