Pirates Drop Close Game to Bruins

March 28, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release

Lewiston, ME-The Pirates fought hard, but fell short to the Providence Bruins Friday night, losing by a final score of 6-5. Mathieu Brodeur, Brendan Shinnimin, Tobias Rieder, Brandon Yip and Andy Miele all scored for the Pirates while Chris Rawlings made 19 saves in the defeat in relief of Louis Domingue.

The game started out with the Bruins taking an early lead. Just 53 seconds into the game, Craig Cunningham got Providence on the board when he stashed home a rebound after Domingue made the initial save. The Pirates would strike back, though, at 7:58. After establishing some offensive zone pressure, Darian Dziurzynski played a puck to the front of the net. With no Pirates in front, it drifted to the far boards, bouncing off perfectly for Brodeur who took a couple of strides in and released a howitzer that blew past Subban.

The Bruins would respond shortly after with Spooner capitalizing with the man-advantage. Almost three minutes later, Justin Florek scored on a two on one with Alexander Khokhlachev and at 13:53, Cunningham would score to give the Bruins a 4-1 lead and ending Domingue's night. But Rawlings got the same treatment from Providence as Rob Flick scored at 14:43 to give the Bruins a commanding 5-1 lead.

Shinnimin, who pledged to donate ten dollars for every Pirates shot and 25 dollars for every goal to the Central Maine Comprehensive Cancer Center, cut the deficit to three at 18:05. Standing in the slot, the puck found its way to his stick and Shinnimin snapped home a shot that beat Subban to the far post.

In the second, Portland came out with a jump, scoring just 1:17 into the period. Miele broke into the right side of the Bruins zone, slammed on the brakes and feathered a pass to Rieder who was streaking towards the net. Rieder redirected the pass to notch his 24th goal of the year and make it 5-3 Providence. Then, at 5:00, Yip made it a one goal game after a pretty display of passing as the Pirates went tic-tac-toe with Yip sliding the puck past Malcolm Subban.

In the third, Ben Sexton scored his first of the year at 4:39, regaining the two-goal lead for Providence. The Pirates continued to battle, capitalizing at 19:57 with a goal from Miele, but it left the Pirates one goal short, as the Bruins would win 6-5.

With 31 shots on goal and five goals scored, Brendan Shinnimin ended up with a total donation of $435. In addition, 19 of his teammates added 5 dollars per shot for a total donation of $2,945. With the team's ownership, On Target Utility Services, and Shamrock Sports and Entertainment matching Shinnimin's donation, $4,685 will be donated to Central Maine Comprehensive Cancer Care.
