Bulldogs Begin Round 2 This Week

Hamilton Bulldogs News Release


The Hamilton Bulldogs (American Hockey League affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens) will move-on to the second round of the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs as they will either battle the Abbotsford Heat (AHL affiliate of Calgary Flames) or Rochester Americans (AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers) in the North Division Final. Game 1 will take place on Thursday, April 29th at 7:30 p.m. at Copps Coliseum while Game 2 will be played at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 2nd at Copps Coliseum.

Last week, the Bulldogs eliminated the Manitoba Moose (AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks) in six games in the North Division Semi-Final series. The 'Dogs won a double overtime game on Wednesday, April 21st at MTS Centre in Winnipeg when P.K. Subban scored in the second overtime period to give the 'Dogs a 5-4 win. On Friday, April 23rd, the Moose stayed alive with a 5-2 victory at MTS Centre. The teams returned to Copps Coliseum on Sunday, April 25th where Hamilton ended Manitoba's season with a 3-2 overtime victory on a goal by Grant Stevenson.

BULLDOGS NOTES:

* The Bulldogs eight goals scored in Game 2 of their first round series ties the franchise record for most goals scored in a post-season game. The last time the club scored eight goals in a playoff game was in the 2003 Calder Cup playoffs when they earned an 8-3 win over the Binghamton Senators.

* Hamilton set a new franchise record for largest margin of victory in a playoff game in Game 2 of their first round series as they won by six goals, passing the previous record of five that was set in the 2003 Calder Cup playoffs.

* The 49 shots that Hamilton had in Sunday's 3-2 overtime win over Manitoba was a season-high for the team.

* D P.K. Subban leads the 'Dogs in post-season points with nine (three goals, six assists) including two game-winning goals.

* Game 7 between the Abbotsford Heat and Rochester Americans is tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. The winner of that game will meet the Bulldogs in Round 2.

* Guy Boucher was named as the winner of the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as the AHL's Outstanding Coach for the 2009-2010 season. Boucher led the 'Dogs to a record of 52-17-3-8 this season.

* Cedrick Desjardins and Curtis Sanford won the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award which is presented to the goaltenders on the team which allows the fewest goals in the regular season.

* Bulldogs D P.K. Subban was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team and was named an AHL First-Team All-Star while G Cedrick Desjardins was named an AHL Second-Team All-Star.

* The Bulldogs broke 31 franchise records during the regular season.

ALUMNI WATCH:

There were more than 40 former Bulldogs on 2009-2010 National Hockey League rosters this past year. Over 60 percent of all former 'Dogs have played in at least one NHL game. Here are a few highlights and accomplishments of ex-'Dogs in the Stanley Cup Playoffs this past week:

* Montreal goaltender Jaroslav Halak made 37 saves in a 2-1 victory over Washington (Apr. 23)

* Montreal forward Tomas Plekanec earned an assist in a 2-1 Game 5 victory over Washington (Apr. 23)

* Washington forward Jason Chimera scored the game-winning goal in a 6-3 win over Montreal (Apr. 21)

* Boston forward Michael Ryder earned an assist in a 3-2 overtime win over Buffalo (Apr. 21)
