Rewind the Tape:
Game 4 - 4.20.10 - Worcester 4 - Lowell 2 - W - Tsongas Center
Worcester's power play came alive and Dan DaSilva tallied three assists as the Sharks defeated the Lowell Devils in game four, 4-2, at the Tsongas Center in Lowell Tuesday night. It was the first time in 14 meetings this season between the two clubs that the team which scored first did not come away with the victory. DaSilva assisted on the first three Worcester goals, Danny Groulx picked up two assists, and Benn Ferriero broke a 24-game goalless drought with a third period game-winning goal as Worcester erased a 2-1 deficit after two periods. Andrew Desjardins, T.J. Trevelyan, and John McCarthy also scored for the Sharks while Alex Stalock made 25 saves in net for the victory.
Game 5 - 4.21.10 - Worcester 1 - Lowell 1 -W - Tsongas Center
Worcester scored first, controlled the game from the start, and never looked back as they eliminated the Lowell Devils, 5-1, Wednesday evening at the Tsongas Center. The Sharks advance to the Atlantic Division Finals for the second straight season. Benn Ferriero and T.J. Trevelyan each tallied twice for the Sharks and Alex Stalock made 33 saves for Worcester in the victory. The Sharks are now 2-0 in clinching games in their franchise history as this was the first series they have clinched on the road. Worcester won four straight after dropping game one to the Devils.
Game 1 - 4.25.10 - Worcester 4 - Manchester 3 - W - DCU Center
The Worcester Sharks erased a two-goal deficit and hung on to defeat the Manchester Monarchs in game one of the best-of-seven Atlantic Division finals, 4-3 at the DCU Center Sunday night. Steven Zalewski provided the heroics late in the third period as Worcester now leads the series one game to none. Dean Strong, Cory Quirk, and Benn Ferriero had the other goals for Worcester. Dennis McCauley chipped in with two assists as well. It was the first time in Sharks franchise history that they have won game one of a playoff series.
Sharks in the Atlantic: Sharks take home Atlantic Division Title!
The Sharks finished swimming in 1st place with 104 points (49-25-3-3) in the Atlantic Division through 80 games, three points ahead of the second place Pirates, 9 points ahead of the third place Manchester Monarchs, and 16 points ahead of the fourth place Lowell Devils. The Sharks had an 18 point cushion over 5th place Sound Tigers, a 21 point edge over the 6th place Wolf Pack and a 26 point advantage over the 7th place Bruins. The 8th place Springfield Falcons (66 points) rounded out a very choppy Atlantic Division.
Playoff Shark Bites:
*From east to west..... The Sharks had 12 players that saw action in both the AHL and NHL this season (McLaren, Zalewski, Vesce, Joslin, McGinn, Couture, Callahan, Ferriero, Mitchell, Demers, McCarthy, and Helminen). The Sharks had 11 players accomplish that feat last season. Logan Couture, Ryan Vesce, Benn Ferriero, Jason Demers, and Frazer McLaren have each recorded their first NHL goals this season. Jamie McGinn, Torrey Mitchell, Logan Couture, Jason Demers, and Dwight Helminen are currently (April 26) on recall to San Jose. The Worcester Sharks had 69 CALL-UPS this season to San Jose.
* The Sharks are 13-11 all time in the Calder Cup playoffs, including winning their last five playoff games overall.
*Home Cooking.... the Sharks are 7-5 in 12 playoff games at the DCU Center.... Including a 2-1 record this season
*Road Warriors... the Sharks are 6-6 in 12 playoff games on the road... including a 3-0 record this season.
*5th time a charm... Worcester won their first ever Game 1 to open a series in a 4-3 win over the Monarchs on Sunday.
*Finally, Game 2... Worcester won their first Game 2 in four tries in franchise history in a 3-2 overtime win over the Devils at the DCU Center on April 15th.
*Special Teams Rocking... the Sharks are 5-for-24 (20.8%) on the power play in the playoffs and 26-for-29 (89.7%) on the penalty kill.
*Jolly Joslin... after going goalless in his first 17 playoff games with the Sharks, Joslin has goals in back-to-back games in Games 2 and 3 vs. the Devils... Derek has also played the most playoff games with Worcester in franchise history (22) and counting.
*Three 3rd period firsts.... Dean Strong, Cory Quirk, and Steve Zalewski all scored their first AHL playoff goals in the third period in the come-from-behind victory over the Monarchs in Game 1.
*Mr. OT... the Sharks are 2-3 in overtime playoff games in franchise history, with Ryan Vesce scoring both of the overtime game winners. Vesce scored at 21:07 of overtime in Game 3 vs. the Wolf Pack in the Atlantic Division Semifinals on April 20th last year and scored at 19:03 in overtime in Game 2 vs. the Devils on April 15th.
*Mr. April's... with seven points (2-5-7) already this playoff season, Dan DaSilva is the all-time leader in Sharks franchise history with 17 points (5-12-17)... Andrew Desjardins has SIX career playoff goals for Worcester which ranks him tops on the leader board.
*Dirty Dozen... With Alex Stalock making his first professional playoff start in Game 1 vs. the Devils on Wednesday, it broke a streak of 12 straight playoff games started by Thomas Greiss... Stalock has started all six playoff games for Worcester this playoff season.
*Hey Mr. T.J.... T.J. Trevelyan has four goals in six playoff games for the Sharks... previously; Trevelyan had 17 points (8-9-17) in 23 career playoff games with the Providence Bruins.
*Scores in bunches... Benn Ferriero had not scored in 24 games before finding the back of the net in Game 4 vs. the Devils.... Currently, Benn has a THREE game goal scoring streak, which includes two game winning goals.
