Toledo Mud Hens News Release
A beautiful Wednesday afternoon in Buffalo, New York featured some offensive fireworks as the Bisons defeated the Mud Hens, 7-5, in the series finale at Coca-Cola Field.
Anthony Gose made his presence felt right away in his first at-bat with the Mud Hens as he ripped a single up the middle, and then he showed off his speed and came around to score on a Chad Huffman RBI single to right field. Toledo (17-21) made it 2-0 in the top of the first when Huffman utilized some heads up base running and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Nate Schierholtz.
Buffalo responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the first thanks to an Andy Burns leadoff triple, a Darrell Ceciliani RBI double, and an AJ Jimenez two-out single knocking in two, to make it 3-2 Bisons after an eventful first inning.
The Bisons mounted a three run lead in the bottom of the second inning after an infield single courtesy of Jimenez scored two, making it 5-2.
Toledo drew even with Buffalo in the fifth inning thanks to some timely two-out hitting. Dixon Machado laced a single up the middle to get the rally started, which was followed by a Huffman RBI double, making it a 5-3 game. Three pitches later, Tyler "country strong" Collins showed off his centerfield power with his second home run of the season, to tie the game 5-5. However, a Junior Lake RBI single off of Toledo's Angel Nesbitt with the infield drawn in, put Buffalo back on top, 6-5, in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Buffalo's Lake notched his second RBI single of the game, this time off of Blaine Hardy, in the bottom of the seventh to tack on an insurance run for the Bisons making it a 7-5 game, which is how the game ended.
Taking the loss for Toledo was Angel Nesbitt who came on in the fourth out of the Mud Hens' bullpen and pitched two innings scattering three hits and allowing one Buffalo run. Starting for Toledo was Chad Bell, who in his first start with the Mud Hens went three innings while allowing five runs off of nine hits and walking three. Blaine Hardy also saw some action for the Mud Hens, as he gave up one run off of two Buffalo hits in one inning of work, and tossing scoreless innings for Toledo were Logan Kensing and Preston Guilmet.
Earning the win for the Bisons was Roberto Hernandez who went five innings while surrendering five runs off of seven hits, and getting the save for Buffalo was Ryan Tepera, who pitched a shutout and allowed one hit in two innings of work.
The Mud Hens' road trip heads to Pennsylvania as Toledo plays the first of a four game series against Lehigh Valley Thursday with the first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Toledo returns home on Tuesday, May 24 against Durham to begin a six game home stand.
