Norfolk Tides News Release
Buffalo's Jeff Harris allowed four hits in seven shutout innings, pitching the Bisons past the Tides 3-0 in front of 10,209 fans Saturday night.
Harris allowed just four singles and one walk in his seven innings, improving his record to 3-4. He retired 10 straight batters from the 2nd through 5th innings, helping the Bisons pick up their second straight win in the series.
Buffalo plated the only run they would need in the top of the second, as left fielder Jason Cooper lined a home run over the right field wall off of Tides' starter Rob Bell (4-3).
The Bisons added their second run of the game in the 5th inning, courtesy of a strange play on the basepaths. With two outs and Ryan Mulhern on second, Jonathan Van Every lined a single into right field, and Tides' right fielder Adam Stern threw quickly to first baseman Mike Cervenak, who was serving as the cutoff man. Van Every rounded first base too far, and Cervenak swept in behind him to get him in a rundown between first and second base. Mulhern had stopped at third on the play, but broke for home while Van Every was in the rundown, and Cervenak's ensuing throw to the plate was late, allowing Mulhern to score.
Buffalo added their third run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Hector Luna in the 6th inning.
Edward Mujica allowed two batters to reach in the 9th inning, but retired Brandon Fahey and Eider Torres to pick up his 11th save of the season.
Bell went seven innings for the Tides, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out five. Bell has now allowed three earned runs or less in each of his 10 starts this season.
The crowd of 10,209 was the second-largest crowd at Harbor Park this season, trailing only the crowd of 11,155 fans on Opening Night.
The Tides and Bisons conclude their four-game set with a 1:15 contest Sunday afternoon. Kurt Birkins (2-2, 3.29) is set to take the hill for Norfolk against right-hander Sean Smith (2-4, 5.69).
