Laredo Bucks News Release

LAREDO, Texas – Laredo Bucks CEO Julian ‘Kiki' DeAyala was inducted into the Laredo Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame this past weekend. DeAyala is currently the CEO of the Laredo Bucks hockey club, Laredo Arena Operating, Laredo Football Holdings and Arena Ventures, which is overseeing the development of the Laredo Entertainment Center Arena Development.

He was inducted on Saturday evening in a ceremony at La Posada Hotel. A total of eight people were inducted, highlighted by Baseball Hall of Famer Juan Marichal.

"I am very humbled by this honor," said DeAyala. "Not just by the thought of who has previously been inducted, but also by the character of those people and the character of the 2004 class."

DeAyala played his college football for the Texas Longhorns and still holds both the UT career sack record with 40.5, and the single season record of 22.5, as well as captaining the 1982 Longhorn team. He went on to play two years in the USFL with the Houston Gamblers from 1984-85, and two seasons in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals during the 1986-87 seasons. DeAyala was a two time, first team All-USFL defensive selection as a linebacker.

"We all feel it is a big responsibility," continued DeAyala. "The concept behind the Laredo Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame is honoring both Latin and Hispanics who have excelled. They are looking for people of character that will serve as good role models for children and that thought is humbling."

DeAyala was recruited to Texas out of the Houston schoolboy ranks as a blue chip linebacker. He also was an all-district high school baseball player. He played in three bowl games as a college player - 1979 Sun Bowl, 1980 Bluebonnet Bowl, and 1982 Cotton Bowl.

He was an All-Southwest Conference first and second team pick during his UT career. He was also the SWC defensive lineman of the year and a third team All-American in 1982.

He is still the all-time Longhorn leader for most tackles for lost yardage in a season with 33 and career with 60. His 56 quarterback pressures remains a single season UT mark and 117 overall is the career record.

DeAyala came to Laredo more than three years ago with Arena Ventures and partners to start the $35.5 million Laredo Entertainment Center project.
