SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS â
TULSA â The Oilers are mired in an 11-game winless streak (0-8-3), but gave the Scorps two tough battles earlier this season. New Mexico won 5-4 in overtime at home on Nov. 26 and then beat the Oilers 3-2 in a shootout at Tulsa two days later. All-Star Jason Bermingham leads the Oilers in scoring with 23 goals and 49 points. Former Scorpion Todd Marcellus isn't far behind with 40 points (17g-23a). Goalie Rod Branch is 11-11-6 with a 2.81 GAA and .920 save percentage. Butch Kaebel is the Oilers coach for the rest of the season, having taken over after Bruce Garber resigned last month.
LUBBOCK â The Scorpions have won four straight games against the Cotton Kings, who broke a seven-game losing streak with a 6-3 win in Austin on Saturday. The Cotton Kings also play at Corpus Christi tonight and at Laredo tomorrow. All-Star Joe Blaznek is the team's leading scorer with 35 points (14g-21a). Goalie Jeremy Symington (6-11-4, 3.40 GAA) has become the team's mainstay after Mike Brusseau was waived last week. In addition to being the league's second-most penalized team at 27.7 PIM per game, the Cotton Kings are last in allowing 3.84 goals per contest.
BOSSIER-SHREVEPORT â The Mudbugs come to Tingley this weekend as the CHL's hottest team, going 17-2-1 since the beginning of December. Bossier-Shreveport claimed a 2-0 win over the Scorpions on Oct. 25, one of two shutouts on the year for All-Star starting goalie Ken Carroll (17-7-2, 2.22 GAA). His counterpart, Jeff Blair, is 9-1-0 with a 1.47 GAA since coming over from Odessa last month. Chad Spurr leads the Mudbugs in scoring with 18 goals and 47 points. Bossier-Shreveport is the league's second-best defensive team, allowing just 2.24 goals per game. Sunday's visit is the first for the Mudbugs to Tingley Coliseum since a 3-1 Scorpions win on Feb. 23, 2002.
ANOTHER FEATHER IN THE CAP â With a goal in each game this weekend, Peter Ambroziak became the Scorpions' all-time leading goal scorer at 135, passing Sylvain Naud. Ambroziak now owns the team's all-time goals, assists, points and games played marks.
STINGERS â Peter Ambroziak has seven goals in his last nine games... Vladimir Hartinger and Clint Wensley set a new season-high with three points each in Friday's win over Amarillo... Brian Barker and Walker McDonald tied their season highs in that game, also with three points each... The Scorpions play seven of their next nine games at Tingley Coliseum... This weekend is the fourth of seven times this season that the Scorpions play three games in as many nights.
