Published on January 19, 2004 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Central Hockey League has today named Bossier-Shreveport forward Chad Spurr as the Bauer/Nike CHL Player of the Week, and Bossier-Shreveport goaltender Ken Carroll as the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week. The CHL All-Star teammates helped the streaking Mudbugs (17-2-1 in their last 20 games) to three consecutive home ice wins this week, defeating Lubbock, Memphis and Oklahoma City.
24-year old Spurr is enjoying a breakout season with Northeast Division frontrunner Bossier-Shreveport, leading the Mudbugs in points (47), goals (18), plus/minus (+22), and shorthanded goals (4). The past week, he recorded two goals and six assists in three contests, including a one goal, two assist performance in a 5-1 win over visiting Lubbock January 16th, and a four-assist outing in an 8-1 home win over Oklahoma City January 18th. The native of Hamilton, Ontario has already easily surpassed his totals last season and will participate in Thursday's Dodge CHL All-Star Game.
Netminder Carroll earns his second nod this season as Vaughn Goaltender of the Week after stopping a combined 56 of 58 shots in home wins over Lubbock and Oklahoma City. Voted to start this Thursday's Dodge CHL All-Star Game for the Northern Conference Rams, Carroll sits fourth in the CHL with a 2.22 goals against average, seventh with a .923 save percentage and is tied for fourth with 17 wins. In the 2000/2001 season, Carroll was the recipient of both the Rookie of the Year and the Most Outstanding Goaltender awards from the Western Professional Hockey League.
