Published on January 19, 2004 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
2004 Dodge Central Hockey League All-Star Week is underway as the top talent in the CHL heads to Albuquerque, New Mexico for the All-Star Game and related events. The agenda kicks off Wednesday with an All-Star Media Luncheon at O'Niell's Uptown, followed by the All-Star Game Banquet at the Santa Ana Star Casino later that night. Highlighting the All-Star Banquet will be special guest speaker and Hockey Hall of Fame legend Phil Esposito, as well as the unveiling of the 2005 CHL All-Star logo for next season's contest in Laredo, Texas.
After practice and photo sessions on Thursday, the All-Star contingent will enjoy lunch and a journey up the world's longest aerial tramway to the 10,378-foot Sandia Peak. Prior to the All-Star Game itself, the Comcast Skills Competition will take place at Tingley Coliseum, with All-Stars participating in five events, including the Fastest Skater, Hardest Shot, Accuracy Shoot-out, Rapid Fire and Breakaway Release events. One roster adjustment has been made to the Southern Conference squad, with 22-year old center Patrik Nilson of the Laredo Bucks joining the All-Star team. Nilson has 19 goals and 22 assists this season, and will replace teammate Chris Grenville, who along with his wife is expecting their second child this week. All-Stars starters Brent Cullaton (Laredo) and Greg Pankewicz (Colorado) will participate despite being called up to their respective club's American Hockey League affiliates in San Antonio and Wilkes-Barre / Scranton.
Over 6,500 tickets to the 2004 Dodge CHL All-Star Game have already been sold, with a near capacity crowd expected for Thursday's contest. Tickets are still available by contacting the host New Mexico Scorpions at (505) 881-7825.
Pointstreak Performance of the Week
Goaltender Greg Hewitt made an immediate impact upon his arrival in Corpus Christi over the weekend. The recently signed netminder made two starts for the Rayz, stopping a combined 84 of 87 shots. In a January 17th home contest against Rio Grande Valley, Hewitt turned aside 44 of 45 shots in a 6-1 victory, earning his first win of the season for Corpus Christi. Earlier this season, Hewitt posted a record of 13-7-3 and a 2.41 goals against average while with Columbus of the United Hockey League.
