December 9, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Laredo Bucks News Release
LAREDO, Texas â Tuesday night the Laredo Bucks ran their franchise record win streak to nine straight games with a 3-0 shutout of the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in front 5,170 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center. Rookie goalie David Guerrera stopped all 25 Killer Bees shots to post his third shutout of the season. The Bucks are 19-3-1 with a CHL best 39 points and remain in first place in the Southeast division. The Bucks are on the road this Friday and Saturday night in Rio Grande Valley and Corpus Christi. Laredo returns home this coming Tuesday against the Corpus Christi Rayz at the LEC. Face off is set for a special time of 11:00 a.m. Call (956) 718-BUCKS (2825) for more information or go online at www.laredobucks.com.
Fresh off a dramatic win over Colorado on Saturday the Bucks were worried about a letdown, but they came out hard against Rio Grande Valley. During a four-on-four period captain Brent Cullaton broke into the zone down the right side and fired a hard wrist shot from the circle that was stopped by Killer Bees goalie Jacque Vezina, but forward Jeff Bes pounced on the rebound and slid it five-hole for his twelfth goal of the year at 6:34. It was the fifteenth time in 23 games Laredo has scored first.
Neither team was able to score in the second period as both goalies traded saves, Vezina for the Killer Bees and David Guerrera for the Bucks.
Early in the third the Bucks survived an early Rio Grande Valley power play chance and then capitalized as they got back to even strength. Forward Max Birbraer skated down the left wing and ripped a slap shot from the top of the left circle by Vezina at 2:46 to make it 2-0. Birbraer had missed six of the last seven games, but returned to pick up his fifth goal of the season. The Killer Bees looked as if they had cut the margin in half when defensemen Kevin Mackie's shot from the point slipped by Guerrera, but a penalty on Rio Grande Valley had been called immediately off the face off which whistled the play dead before the goal had been scored. On the ensuing Bucks power play defenseman Serge Dube scored his fifth goal of the season at 13:58 to complete the scoring. Guerrera stopped all 12 shots he saw to complete the shutout. FINAL SCORE Laredo 3, Rio Grande Valley 0.
Guerrera is tied for the CHL lead with three shutouts and improved to 10-1-0. Vezina played very well in defeat, allowing three goals on 36 shots to drop to 2-2-1. The Bucks out shot the Bees 36-25. Rio Grande Valley has not scored a goal in over 131 minutes of game time.
