Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
Laredo Bucks goaltender David Guerrera stopped all 25 shots fired by the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees to earn his third shutout of the season (co-leads Killer Bees goaltender Jeff Levy atop the CHL) and assist the Laredo Bucks to a 3-0 victory over the Killer Bees Tuesday night at the Laredo Entertainment Center.
It is the fourth consecutive Killer Bees game and the fifth in their past six to result in shutout results. The first two (12/5, 12/6) resulted in shutout victories, but the previous two have resulted in shutout losses. The Killer Bees have gone 131:26 since scoring their last goal, which is a team high.
Laredo Bucks forward Jeff Bess, who leads the season series in scoring, opened the scoring in the contest 6:34 into the first period picking up a long rebound in the left circle and slipping it through the leg pads of Jacque Vezina. The goal ended the Killer Bees road shutout sequence at 120:42, their even strength goal shutout sequence (the goal was a 4-on-4 even strength goal) at 234:30, and ended Vezina's shutout sequence at a personal best 95:59 (second longest on team). After a scoreless second period, the Bucks made it 2-0 2:46 into the third period as Max Birbraer fired the puck from the left circle on a two-on-one past Vezina.
The Killer Bees thought they had ended their long scoreless drought with 11:24 remaining, but Bees forward Justin Van Parys was whistled for obstruction holding resulting in the goal being waved off. Van Parys argued the call resulting in an additional penalty and while shorthanded, Serge Dube rattled the puck into the top shelf for the Bucks to extend the lead to 3-0.
The game was very chippy, resulting in a combined 113 penalty minutes. It is the highest penalty minute total in a Killer Bees game this season and the Bees recorded a season high 66 minutes and 18 minor penalties. The two teams meet again, completing the home-and-home series Friday night at the Dodge Arena.
