JUPITER, Fla. - Bryan Evans has been honored as the Florida Marlins Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July for his performance with the Jupiter Hammerheads.

In five July starts, Evans went 5-0 with a 1.20 ERA, striking out 25 batters while walking just four. The right-hander also tossed two scoreless innings in relief of rehabbing Marlins pitcher Clay Hensley, in which he gave up just one hit and no walks while striking out two. Including the relief innings, Evans posted a 1.13 ERA in the month of July, holding opposing hitters to a .168 batting average

The Mission Viejo, California native was named the Florida State League's Pitcher of the Week on July 25th, after a pair of starts in which he went six scoreless innings. Evans began the season in the Jupiter bullpen, where he held batters to just two earned runs on 15 hits in 23 innings.

For the season, Evans went 5-1 with 1.02 ERA for Jupiter, with the performance earning him a promotion to Double-A Jacksonville at the start of the month. He won his first start with Jacksonville on Wednesday, giving up two runs (one earned) in six innings, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out six.

Evans was a 14th round pick by the Marlins in the 2008 MLB Draft, coming from the University of California-Davis. In 18 games (15 starts) with the Hammerheads last season, Evans held opponents to a .263 batting average, the lowest mark by any Jupiter pitcher with at least 80 innings pitched.

The honor makes Evans the second Hammerhead to be recognized by the Marlins this year. Outfielder Kyle Jensen was named the organization's Player of the Month for April. Jensen has continued his hot start, making his case for the Florida State League's MVP Award by putting up the league's fourth-highest batting average (.316) while swatting a second-best 21 homers.

Greensboro Grasshoppers outfielder Christian Yelich was named the Marlins Minor League Player of the Month on Friday as well. Yelich, the Marlins 1st round pick in 2010, batted .372 with four home runs and 20 RBI in July.

Although Evans is now with Jacksonville, he has been just one part of a Hammerheads rotation that leads the Florida State League with a 3.33 ERA. Jupiter lowered that mark on Thursday night by shutting out the St. Lucie Mets in both games of a doubleheader, with Rob Rasmussen, who was drafted behind Yelich in the 2nd round of the 2010 draft, tossing his first career shutout.
