Bruins Loot Pirates 6-1

Providence, RI -- The Providence Bruins improved to (21-16-0-3) with a 6-1 win against the Portland Pirates this evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Torey Krug tallied three points with two goals and one assist. Nine different skaters recorded points and Niklas Svedberg made 25 saves in the victory.

Providence came into the game looking for their fourth win against Portland this season after having beat them in three previous match ups. A delayed penalty gave the P-Bruins their first power play of the game at 2:22 and it took them less than a minute into the power play to get on the board when Krug's shot from the blue line beat Mark Visentin (20 saves) with assists to Carter Camper and Jamie Tardif. Camper made it 2-0 a few minutes later after Visentin got a piece of the puck but did not stop it from getting over his shoulder into the net. Krug and Trent Whitfield had assists on the goal. The Pirates cut the lead in half at 7:29 shorthanded with Joel Rechlicz in the box. Svedberg made the initial save but slide into his net and after a review of the play it was ruled a goal for Jordan Szwarz for the Pirates. The penalty to Rechlicz was the first of four penalties in a row to Portland, giving Providence three 5-on-3 chances right after one another. After a scrum on the ice with a few skaters as well as Visentin on the ice, the goal light went off but after a review it was ruled no goal due to the puck actually being in the goalie's pads. The no-goal did not deter the Bruins who got one right back on one of their 5-on-3 chances. Krug took a slapshot from the right faceoff circle that hit the back of the net and rang the post on its way in for his second goal of the night, giving him his first multi point game of his career. David Warsofsky and Camper both had assists giving Camper his fifth multi point game of the season. The three goals in the period would match Providence's season high in goals in the first period, first accomplished on October 19th against Manchester and January 11th against Bridgeport.

The middle frame had the P-Bruins dominating the first half, holding the Pirates shotless past the ten minute mark. Tardif had the best chance in scoring for either team with about 13 minutes to go when he went in on Visentin 1-on-1 against Mathieu Brodeur. Tardif dangled the puck around Brodeur and picked it back up but shot it too late to score. Providence got into a bit of penalty trouble with nine minutes to go when Bobby Robins and former Bruin Boris Valbik got into a tussle along the boards resulting in matching unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and an additional two minutes to Robins for roughing. Just 37 seconds later, Matt Bartkowski joined Robins in the box for a cross-checking penalty. The penalty kill units came out hard and held the Pirates scoreless on the two man advantage and the remainder of the penalty as well. The Bruins had a shot at a shorthanded goal when a turnover gave Christian Hanson possession of the puck and he and Kyle MacKinnon started on a 2-on-1 with 10 seconds remaining in the penalty. Hanson and MacKinnon did get on the board with 36 seconds to go in the period when MacKinnon scored up front just inside the right faceoff circle to make it 4-1. Hanson and Graham Mink had the assists.

Providence came out dominating the third period like they had the previous two. Portland did not record their first shot on goal until 8:26 of the period while Providence only had three through the first half of the period. Despite the low number on shots, the Bruins made them count with one resulting in a goal from Tardif, beating Visentin up front glove side. Maxime Sauve had the primary assist and Krug got the secondary for his fourth point of the night. Krug's four points set a career high and surpassed any amounts he has even scored in a month all season. The Bruins capped the scoring when Sauve was in alone on a breakaway and wristed the puck over Visentin to make it 6-1. Six goals is the most Providence has ever scored against the Pirates and a five goal margin is the largest margin of victory Providence has had all season.
