Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' five-game winning streak came to an end at Blue Cross Arena on Friday night as the Rochester Americans skated to a 4-2 victory.
Down by one after the first, the Americans exploded for four goals in the middle period to take a decisive edge.
Just as the Penguins had scored early in the previous frame, Rochester struck 1:15 into the second when defenseman Mark Pysyk took the puck blueline to blueline before beating Brad Thiessen from the high slot to knot the score at one.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went ahead once again midway through the period after Tom Kostopoulos kept a puck alive in the Americans crease and Zach Sill crept in from behind the net to stuff home his first of the season.
From there, it was all Rochester to close out the frame. Bryan Flynn was given credit for a Rochester power play marker after a pass kicked of a skate and under Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goalie Brad Thiessen.
Adam Pardy and Kevin Sundher both found the back of the net over a span of 1:31 to close out the second period and put Rochester up by a score of 4-2.
Thiessen would be replaced by Jeff Zatkoff during the second intermission, having made 14 saves on 18 shots. Zatkoff stopped the four shots he faced over the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Acquired from the New York Rangers organization yesterday, Chad Kolarik made quite the debut with his first shot on the first shift in his first game with the Penguins. Brian Gibbons threw a wrister on net during a 3-on-2 rush and it was Kolarik shoving the rebound past Amerks netminder David Leggio to make it, 1-0, at 1:36 of the first.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins continue their road weekend as they face the Toronto Marlies on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 5:00PM. Tune in on 102.3 The Mountain and AHLLive.com.
