Providence Bruins News Release
Hartford, CT - The Providence Bruins lost to the Hartford Wolf Pack in a shootout by a final score of 2-1 tonight at the XL Center. The regulation P-Bruins goal scorer was Alexander Khokhlachev and Seth Griffith scored in the shootout. Malcolm Subban made 24 saves.
In the first period, the P-Bruins and Wolf Pack came out strong, with both teams trading quality scoring chances. The goaltending battle started early with Subban and Hartford goaltender David LeNeveu making some great saves early on. However, the P-Bruins struck first at the 14:37 mark.
Khokhlachev received a pass from Zach Trotman and shot home a hard wrist shot for his 21st goal this season. The opening frame remained scoreless the rest of the way with the P-Bruins taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
In the second period, the P-Bruins were able to stay strong defensively taking some undisciplined penalties. However, the Wolf Pack scored at the 1:12 mark in the middle frame. J.T. Miller set himself up just beyond the right face-off circle of Subban. He caught a pass from teammate Tommy Hughes and took a hard wrist shot that sailed to the top-shelf of the P-Bruins nets. In similar fashion, that was lone goal scored in the middle frame as the teams went to a 1-1 tie in the second intermission.
In the third period, the P-Bruins and Wolf Pack picked up an intense physical game. Both teams remained strong in net with the P-Bruins taking some undisciplined penalties. The game remained scoreless and went into an eventual overtime and shootout.
In the shootout, the P-Bruins lone goal scorer Griffith was able to net one in the third round. However, the Wolf Pack scored twice in the best-of-three contest with T.J. Hensick and Ryan Bourque scoring in the fifth and sixth round respectively. The final score in this game was 2-1, shootout win for the Wolf Pack.
The P-Bruins went 0-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. Subban blocked 24 of 25 shots while counterpart LeNeveu stopped 26 of 27 shots.
The P-Bruins will be back in action at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. when they take on the Portland Pirates. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Stadium Cup courtesy of Cool Air Creations.
