St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - John Albert scored two goals and Jason Jaffray picked up assists on both, as the St. John's IceCaps downed the Springfield Falcons 3-1 Saturday night at Mile One Centre.
Jerome Samson also scored for the IceCaps, who earned three-of-four points on the weekend. Tyler Beskorowany was strong between the pipes, stopping 23-of-24 shots, as the IceCaps's magic number to clinch a playoff spot was reduced to three points.
Albert put the IceCaps on the board first 4:34 into the opening period, when he notched his 22nd of the season. After Jeremy Smith made the initial save on Jaffray, Albert was Johnny-on-the-spot as he pounced on the rebound and fired it into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
In the second period, St. John's jumped ahead to a 2-0 advantage midway through the frame. Pressuring behind the Springfield goal, Brenden Kichton found Samson on the door step, who made no mistake in shoveling it past Smith.
Then, at 15:13, Albert set up and finished off a gorgeous give-and-go play with Jaffray. Breaking into the Springfield zone after a flip pass from Will O'Neill, Jaffray leaped over a fallen Falcons defender and burst in on a 2-on-0 with Albert. The two played give-and-go before Albert finished off the highlight-reel play to make it 3-0.
Patrick McNeill foiled Beskorowany's shutout bid with under five minutes to play in the final frame when his point shot redirected off a body in front and eluded the IceCaps' puck stop. That's as close as the Falcons came, however, as St. John's finished strong to earn the victory.
The IceCaps continue their six-game home stand Tuesday night (7:30 PM NT), when they take on the Hamilton Bulldogs in the first of two back-to-back games at Mile One Centre. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers on Rogers TV, www.stjohnsicecaps.com and 930 AM, or watch online at www.ahllive.com. Pregame show gets underway at 7:00.
