Bridgeport, CT -- The Providence Bruins defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-3 this evening at the Webster Bank Arena, sweeping the home-and-home series. Graham Mink, Justin Florek, Jamie Tardif, Kyle MacKinnon and Torey Krug scored and Niklas Svedberg posted 28 saves in as the Bruins improve to 29-17-0-3 on the season.
After handing the Sound Tigers a decisive 7-3 defeat last night in Providence, the Providence Bruins traveled to Bridgeport with the intention of winning the ninth of their last 10 games. Mink scored his third goal of the season at 12:14 of the first period, tipping in Colby Cohen's blast from the point. Matt Bartkowski also assisted on the play. Less than two minutes later Florek his fifth goal off a beautiful drop pass from Ryan Spooner.
The Sound Tigers cut the lead in half at 3:39 of the second, but the Bruins' Tardif silenced any of the Sound Tigers' hopes, scoring on the power play his 26th goal of the season off a highlight reel pass from Spooner at 11:27. Tardif's goal put him on top of the AHL scoring race. Two unanswered Bridgeport goals in the final six minutes of the frame, tied the game and the teams went into the second intermission tied 3-3.
The Bruins opened the third period right where they left off in the second. MacKinnon, Mink and Trent Whitfield opened the frame with a bunch of scoring opportunities, but couldn't find the back of the net. They finally broke through Kevin Poulin at 7:46 when MacKinnon beat the Sound Tigers netminder top shelf off Mink's rebound. After solid play from Svedberg stalwarted the Sound Tigers' attempts, the Bruins sealed the 5-3 win with less than 20 seconds to play. Whitfield won the draw cleanly back to Krug who scored a bank shot goal, extending his point streak to 10 games.
The Bruins return to The Dunk on Sunday, February 16 for a matinee with the Worcester Sharks. The puck drops at 3:05 p.m. for Stadium Cup Day. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a free stadium cup courtesy of Cool Air Creations and Iron Workers Local 37.
