Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - After being held to one goal in their previous two games, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins exploded for a 5-2 win against the Binghamton Senators at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Chad Kolarik led the charge with a goal and three assists, while Trevor Smith recorded two goals and an assist and Riley Holzapfel contributed three helpers. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton finished the game 3-for-11 on the power play and also notched a shorthanded marker from Brian Gibbons.
The Penguins received a golden opportunity to take an early lead on the road with a two-man advantage. They would convert on the ensuing 5-on-4 when Kolarik accepted a Smith pass in the slot and fired it past Robin Lehner at 4:35 of the first.
It was Binghamton tying the score at 4:42 of the second with its 14th shorthanded goal of the year. A turnover by the Penguins at center ice led to a chance up-ice for the Senators' Cole Schneider and Tyler Eckford followed up to slip the rebound under goalie Brad Thiessen.
Smith put the Penguins back on top with 4:31 left in the frame on his team's eighth man-advantage of the match, knocking in a loose puck lying in the crease for his 15th goal this season.
Kolarik and Smith teamed up again 35 seconds into the final frame as Smith gathered his second goal in the contest and make it a 3-1 lead for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Binghamton would try to close the gap four minutes time later working on a power play, but Gibbons stole the puck and raced in on Lehner before roofing a backhand shot that put the Penguins ahead by three.
Dylan Reese and Jack Downing traded goals late in regulation to complete the scoring. Thiessen made 22 saves on 24 shots to raise his record to 10-9-1 on the season.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins finish their weekend on Sunday, February 17 against the Syracuse Crunch at 4:05PM. Tune in on 102.3 The Mountain and AHLLive.com.
