Providence Bruins News Release
Springfield, MA -- The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Falcons 5-2 this evening at the Mass Mutual Center. Justin Florek, Ryan Spooner and Max Sauvé scored and Kyle MacKinnon added two goals. Niklas Svedberg made 29 saves as the Bruins improved to 37-19-0-5 and gained sole possession of second place in the Eastern Conference.
In a battle to gain a solid second place spot in the Eastern Conference, both teams came out hungry for the two points. The Falcons, who fell to the Bruins in a shootout last night in Providence, struck first at 10:04 when Dalton Smith fed Nathan Moon who slid a shot past Svedberg despite falling. The Bruins controlled the play for much of the frame and made it count at 17:45. Colby Cohen's bomb front the point sailed in front and was redirected by Florek for his second goal in as many nights.
After a scoreless second period, the Bruins entered the third period looking for the go-ahead goal. Spooner did just that on the power play at 2:02 when his shot from the low right circle found its way past Paul Dainton. Keeping in the back and forth pattern of the game, the Falcons responded at 9:04 of the third to tie the game 2-2. The Bruins were quick to respond though as MacKinnon found the back of the net while falling to give the Bruins the go-ahead goal at 13:12. Spooner and Graham Mink assisted on the play. The Bruins capitalized off that momentum and with just over three minutes to play in the third, Sauvé put home a rebound to give the Bruins a 4-2 lead. In a last ditch effort, the Falcons pulled Dainton with 2:04 to play. That move cost them as MacKinnon scored on the empty net, his second goal of the game to secure the Bruins 5-2 win.
The Bruins return to The Dunk on Sunday, March 17 versus the Manchester Monarchs. The puck drops at 3:05 p.m. for Stadium Cup Day. The first 1,000 fans will receive a free stadium cup courtesy of Cool Air Creations and Countrywide Gold Buyers.
