Pirates and Penguins Battle for Playoff Position

Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates will look for revenge as they face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the second straight Saturday at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Puck drop is set for 7 PM for the final contest between the two during the regular season. The Pirates currently sit in 5th place in the Eastern Conference with 73 points, while the Penguins are in 6th place just 4 points back. Check out the AHL Playoff Primer here .

The Pirates defeated the Adirondack Phantoms by a 6-3 margin on Wednesday to snap their three game home skid. Alexandre Bolduc extended his point streak to 5 games, tallying a goal and an assist, while Chris Brown scored his team leading 23rd goal, and 11th power play score of the year. Chad Johnson, making his first back to back start since December 11th and 24th, stopped 26 of 29 shots for his 16th victory of the year.

The Penguins beat the Worcester Sharks by a 5-3 margin on Friday night. Brad Thiessen stopped 34 of 37 shots, while 3 different Penguins had multi-point games. Chad Kolarik scored his team leading 23rd goal and added an assist to power the Penguins offense.

The Penguins and Pirates last clashed on Saturday, March 9th in an exciting contest that saw the Penguins eek out a 4-3 victory in overtime. Mike Lee faced 45 shots in the loss, with Chris Conner and Chris Brown (2 goals) providing the offense for Portland. The highly emotional game ended with some fireworks, resulting in 39 penalty minutes being assessed after the game had concluded. Brad Thiessen picked up the win for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, making 21 saves for the Penguins.
