Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY- Brett Connolly and the Syracuse Crunch powered past the Albany Devils 6-2 tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
Connolly had four points (2g, 2a) to lead the Crunch to an overall record of 37-17-3-5 and a league-leading 82 points. The Crunch are 14-10-3-3 at the War Memorial.
After 20 minutes of play Syracuse held a commanding three-goal lead over the Devils thanks to goals from Connolly, JP Cote and Richard Panik.
Connolly opened the scoring with a blast from the slot after a feed from Vladislav Namestnikov from behind the net. JP Cote gave Syracuse a two-goal advantage 30 seconds later when his shot from the left point found its way through traffic and past Albany netminder Scott Wedgewood. Panik found the back of the net four minutes later on the power play with 9:22 remaining in the first period. Panik one-timed a Connolly feed past Wedgewood for his 22nd goal of the season.
Syracuse matched its first-period effort with three more tallies - in the span of 2:35 - in the middle stanza. JT Brown extended the Crunch lead to 4-0, beating Wedgewood after skating the puck in from the left wing 7:22 into the second period. Philip-Michael Devos netted his fourth goal of the season under two minutes later. Wedgewood blocked a Connolly shot but couldn't cover the puck before the rebound found Devos, who shoveled the puck over the goal line. Connolly netted his second goal of the game, and fourth point of the night, on the power play 46 seconds later.
The Devils began the third period by replacing Wedgewood with Keith Kinkaid. Wedgewood allowed six goals on 21 shots. Kinkaid held the Crunch scoreless on seven shots in the final frame. Dan Kelly ended Riku Helenius's shutout bid eight minutes into the third period. Joe Whitney added another goal at the 12:38 mark for a final score of 6-2. Helenius finished the night with 28 saves on 30 shots.
