Lancaster Stormers News Release
LANCASTER, Pa.-Recent Hall-of-Fame inductee and Lancaster County native Bruce Sutter will attend the Barnstormers first-ever home playoff game on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at Clipper Magazine Stadium and participate in pre-game ceremonies, it was announced today.
Sutter will meet fans from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium prior to game two of the Atlantic League divisional series. Autographs will be limited to one item per person on a first-come, first-served basis until 6:30. Sutter will then be honored on the field and throw out a ceremonial first pitch. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
"A lot has changed in Lancaster since I moved away 35 years ago," Sutter said. "(The playoffs) are going to be exciting for the people in Lancaster and it's nice to see they're supporting the team."
"I can't think of a better way to start our playoff run than to honor a player from Lancaster County who's won a World Series and been elected to the Hall of Fame," Barnstormers General Manager Joe Pinto said. "Having Bruce back home is going to make Wednesday a truly special night in Lancaster."
Sutter was enshrined this summer in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., for his 12-career as one of baseball's top relief pitchers. Sutter used his renowned split-fingered fastball to dominate Major League hitters from 1976 to 1988. A pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves, Sutter was a six-time All-Star and won the 1979 Cy Young Award. Sutter set a National League record with 45 saves in 1984 and finished his career with 300 saves and a 2.84 ERA. Sutter was a teammate of Barnstormers Manager Tom Herr in St. Louis and both players were on the field for the final six outs of the Cardinals' 1982 World Series championship, with Sutter earning the save.
Sutter was born Jan. 8, 1953, in Lancaster and graduated from Donegal High School in Mount Joy. He was captain of the Donegal football and basketball teams and led his high school baseball team to the county championship. He was drafted by the Washington Senators in 1970 and returned home briefly to play baseball for the semi-pro Hippey's Raiders in the Lebanon Valley League.
"I'm looking forward to coming back, signing a few autographs, saying 'Hi' to Tommy, throwing out the first pitch and meeting a few people," Sutter said.
A limited number of dugout box and field box seats are still available for the Barnstormers first home playoff game on Wednesday, Sept. 27, and any other postseason game at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Tickets can be purchased at the stadium box office, by calling 717-509-3633 or online at www.lancasterbarnstormers.com. Lawn seating will be available at the box office the day of each game beginning at 4 p.m. All fans are encouraged to wear red to all Barnstormers playoff games.
