Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
Brooklyn, NY - Brooklyn defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks by the score of 2-1 on Saturday night on Coney Island in the penultimate home game of the 2022 regular season. JT Schwartz went 2-for-4 with an RBI that provided the winning margin and Sammy Tavarez (3-1) and Daison Acosta combined for 4.1 scoreless innings of shutout relief to close out the victory.
Brooklyn opened the scoring in the bottom of the second after Stanley Consuegra singled and Jose Mena followed with a walk to put two runners aboard with nobody out. After William Lugo flied out and Joe Suozzi struck out, Shervyen Newton collected a two-out RBI with a single to right field to give Brooklyn a 1-0 lead.
Jeffrey Colon made the start for Brooklyn and cruised through the first four innings before running into trouble in the top of the fifth. Cody Wilson doubled to start the frame and moved to third on a ground out for the first out of the inning. Colon battled back to strike out Paul Witt for out number two and got Cole Daily to hit a grounder to first for what seemed like out number three, but the Wilmington speedster beat Colon to the bag for an infield single that knotted the score at 1-1.
Brooklyn broke the tie in their next turn at bat after Joe Suozzi singled to start the inning and Alex Ramirez added a two-out single that moved him into scoring position. JT Schwartz took advantage of the scoring chance with a line drive single up the middle to score Suozzi and give Brooklyn a 2-1 edge.
That would be all the scoring, as Sammy Tavarez and Daison Acosta combined to allow just one base runner over the final 4.1 innings to finish off the Blue Rocks.
Brooklyn remains just ý a game out of first place with seven games remaining as Hudson Valley was also victorious on Satuday night.
Brooklyn will close out their home schedule on Sunday afternoon when they take on the Blue Rocks one more time. First pitch is 2:00 on Sunday Funday and RHP Mike Vasil will make the start for the 'Clones.
