Swift Current Broncos News Release
The Swift Current Broncos saw their lengthy win streak at home come to a hault on Friday night in heartbreaking fashion, letting a two-goal lead slip away in a 5-4 shootout loss.
Swift Current came out on fire as Aleksi Heponiemi from the left end boards fed Kaden Elder who made a nice cut to the net, tapping a low shot by Raiders goaltender Ian Scott to make it 1-0 Broncos early on.
Heponiemi continued his terrific playmaking ability in setting up Giorgio Estephan for his 29th goal of the year, extending the Broncos lead to 2-0.
Prince Albert got one on the board 4:07 into the second period as Sergei Sapego blasted one by Broncos goaltender Stuart Skinner on a Raiders power play.
Swift Current restored their two goal cushion as 20-year-old Glenn Gawdin executed a pretty pass to set up Matteo Gennaro. Scott's night was done shortly after the goal and Curtis Meger entered the game in relief. The assist by Gawdin saw the captain extend his point streak to 24 straight games.
A big hit by Washington Capitals prospect Beck Malenstyn freed up a loose puck and it found Estephan in good open territory. The Edmonton, AB native ripped it home for his second of the game and 30th of the year.
Prince Albert got one back before the second intermission as Brayden Pachal wrapped up a nice passing play that involved Cole Fonstad and Jordy Stallard to see the score read 4-2 toward the third and final frame.
Raiders blue liner Vojtech let a wrist shot go from the left faceoff dot and it got by a screened Skinner to cut the score to 4-3 Broncos.
Late in the game, the Raiders pulled Miske for the extra attacker and the Broncos couldn't cling on to the one-goal margin. Jordy Stallard tipped home a Max Martin point shot to tie it 4-4 and force overtime.
The extra five minutes solved nothing so a shootout was needed. Gennaro would score a dandy goal but the Raiders' Regan Nagy and Parker Kelly scored to lift the visiting team to a 5-4 victory, ending Swift's 11-game home win streak.
Shots on goal were 38-36 in favour of Prince Albert. The Raiders power play netted two goals on six tries while the Broncos went 1/5.
The Swift Current Broncos are back at it on Saturday, March 3rd when they welcome the Brandon Wheat Kings for RE/MAX presents: WHL Suits Up with Don Cherry to Promote Organ Donation. Puck drop is at 7:00pm CT.
