Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - Connor Dewar broke a late 2-2 tie with back to back goals and Patrick Bajkov became the all-time leading goal scorer in franchise history to help rally the Everett Silvertips to a 4-2 victory over the Kelowna Rockets before 5,778 fans in downtown Everett, in WHL action on Friday.
The Silvertips swept Kelowna (4-0-0-0) for the first time in franchise history. Bajkov, tying the game with his 29th goal of the year at 11:39 of the third period, scored the 108th goal in his Silvertips career to become the all-time leader. Garrett Pilon, playing in the 200th game of his career, earned a pair of assists.
The Silvertips reduced their magic number to 11 points for the U.S. Division title.
UP NEXT: The Silvertips host the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday night in downtown Everett, 7:05 p.m. (1380 AM / FM 95.3 / WHL Live / Tips App).
The first period saw a great 200 foot game between the two Western Conference leading teams. At the 6:22 mark, an ugly play by Leif Mattson led to a power play for the tips as he charged Connor Dewar head first into the boards; Connor was not injured on the play and continued his shift. The Tips came up empty handed on the power play. Kelowna scored first as Carter Hart was beaten high glove side by Carsen Twarynski, on a flip pass by Dillon Dube to make it 1-0 at 12:51.
The second period was primarily controlled by the Tips as they outshot the Rockets, 15-6.
At 5:17, Kole Lind snuck behind Silvertips defensemen and scored an unassisted goal on a snap shot to make it 2-0 Kelowna. Shortly after the goal, Kelowna was called for too many men, giving the Tips their third power play of the evening.
Kelowna had a shorthanded breakaway that was broken up by a terrific play by Wyatte Wylie, but the Tips were unable to capitalize on the power play. Towards the end of the period, the Tips were able to cut Kelowna's lead in half as chaos in front of the net and a shot by Matt Fonteyne made it past Salmond from the left circle as it bounced off of a Kelowna defenseman, making it 2-1 at 18:41.
The Tips' tying goal at 11:39 was a huge moment in Silvertip history as a Sean Richards rebound ended up on Bajkov's stick, and fired the puck past Salmond from the right circle for his 108th career goal and a 2-2 tie.
The Tips stormed to their first lead of the night on a goal by Connor Dewar with 3:09 left in the third to make it 3-2 game, pounding a rebound after he was stopped on a backdoor play. Kelowna got their second too many men penalty of the game with less than two minutes left and 20 seconds later, Dewar got his second of the night and the insurance goal at 19:11 on a set up by Garrett Pilon in the slot to make it 4-2 Tips.
Carter Hart's counterpart, Brodan Salmond, made 36 saves.
