Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
San Jose, California - The American Hockey League's San Jose Barracuda, an affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, have announced the signing of Brandon Wheat Kings' overage right-winger Evan Weinger.
Per club policy, terms and financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
"Evan has high-end speed and can play in all situations," said Doug Wilson Jr., Director of Hockey Operations for the San Jose Sharks. "He plays on the inside and has a quick release from both sides of the ice. We've been following him for a while now, and we're excited for him to join the organization."
The native of El Segundo, California, Weinger, 20, participated in the Los Angeles Kings Development Camp this past summer and played for the LA Jr. Kings under-16 and under-18 programs before moving onto to the Western Hockey League in 2014.
So far this season, Weinger has recorded 50 points (26 goals, 24 assists), 23 penalty minutes, and a plus-three rating in 57 games with Brandon. In addition, the winger skated in one game with the Portland Winterhawks (WHL).
Weinger was acquired by the Wheat Kings from the Portland Winterhawks in October 2017.
Over his four-year junior career, Weinger has appeared in 244 WHL games with Brandon and Portland, totaling 139 points (63 goals, 76 assists), 120 penalty minutes, and a plus-11 rating. In 30 playoff games, he has posted 10 points (three goals, seven assists), 10 penalty minutes, and a minus-four rating.
The six-foot, 195-pound winger was teammates with Sharks draft selection Joachim Blichfeld in Portland in 2016-17.
In the meantime, Weinger and his Wheat King teammates will be in Swift Current Saturday night to face off against the second place Broncos. Brandon is coming off a 4-2 win over the league leading Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday.
Brandon's next home game is Tuesday night against Lethbridge at Westoba Place.
