Broncos Show Promise in Loss to Chiefs

SWIFT CURRENT, SK - The Swift Current Broncos (10-41-1-3) had a solid opening and final 20 minutes against the Spokane Chiefs (34-18-4-1) Friday night, but a three-goal second period by Spokane lifted them to a 5-1 win.

Spokane opened the scoring 1:32 into the game as the Eli Zummack slid the puck across the slot to Luke Toporowski on a two-on-one to give the Chiefs and early lead.

The Broncos weathered a storm from Spokane as the shots read 12-3 Chiefs at one point before the Broncos started to get some extended zone time.

Shortly after a Broncos power play expired, Swift Current tied the game. Ty Smith tried to send the puck up the middle from behind his net, but it ended up on the stick of Hayden Ostir who lifted it over the blocker of Lukas Parik to tie the game.

Spokane turned on the pressure in the second period and regained their lead with an early power-play marker. Adam Beckman picked up a loose puck in the slot and fired home his league-leading 44th of the season 2:36 into the second.

Parik robbed Bode Hagan off a two-on-one rush part way through the period to keep the Chiefs ahead before Spokane got a lucky one to extend their lead.

Michael King threw the puck on net from the right boards and it bounced off Kaleb Bulych and into the net to push Spokane's lead to 3-1.

Ty Smith added to the lead with a shot from the slot that beat a screened DiLaura as the Chiefs took a 4-1 lead into the third period.

The Broncos pushed back in the third period, matching Spokane shot for shot as each team finished with 15 in the period, but Swift Current native Reed Jacobson finished off the scoring with 1:22 left in the game as Spokane won 5-1.

The Broncos are on the road to play the Saskatoon Blades for the fourth and final time this season tomorrow night.

Announced attendance was 2,080.
