Swift Current Broncos News Release
LANGLEY, BC - The Swift Current Broncos (2-6-1-2) played their best game of the season Saturday night, but lost 4-3 in a shootout to the Vancouver Giants (7-6-0-0).
Ben King opened the scoring late in the first on a giveaway by Giants goalie Trent Miner. Miner came out of his net to play a dump in and swung it around the boards behind his net. It went right to the stick of King who fired it into the net before Miner could get back in position. The Broncos led 1-0 after one.
Early in the second the Giants tied the game. Shortly after a power play expired, Bowen Byram sent a long-range wrist shot through traffic and past a screened Reece Klassen to tie the game.
Late in the period, while playing four-on-four, Hayden Ostir was robbed on a centring pass from below the goal line.
Moment later the Giants came out 2-on-1 and Cole Shepard, who was making his WHL debut, scored to give the Giants a 2-1 lead.
The Broncos tied the game before the period was up however. After a neutral zone turnover by the Giants, Ben King slid the puck across the zone for Joona Kiviniemi in the left circle.
Kiviniemi was stopped by Miner but the puck snuck under his arm and was sitting in the crease. Kasper Puutio jumped on it for his first career goal with just 12 seconds left in the period.
Vancouver regained the lead early in the third on a somewhat controversial play. Lukas Svejkovsky fired the puck across the blue line while it appeared as though another Giants player was offside.
The puck came to Tristan Nielsen who dangled his way to the front of the net before lifting it over Klassen's glove to restore the Giants lead.
Just over three minutes later Ethan Regnier tied the game. After skating into the Giants zone he used the defenceman as a screen and beat Miner on the glovce side from the high slot to tie the game.
The Broncos had to kill off a penalty with a few minutes remaining before getting a power play of their own with under a minute to play, but neither team could score as the game went to a shootout.
After Svejkovky and Regnier scored on the first two shots, the next two were stopped. Shepard then scored to give the Giants a chance to win, but Connor Horning scored to keep the game alive.
The next 10 shooters were stopped before Sergei Alkhimov finally scored, setting the stage for Miner to deny Ostir, sealing the win for the Giants.
The Broncos now get set to finish off the BC Division road swing when they take on the Prince George Cougars on Tuesday night.
