Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - Despite outshooting their opponents 34-18, special teams told the story Tuesday Night as the Swift Current Broncos made their way to a 5-2 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers at Co-op Place.
The first period saw the Broncos counter on special teams thanks to a re-direct shot from Owen Pickering that would be credited to Drew Englot notching his 6th of the season to open the scoring for the visitors at 4:15. Then the Tigers would get a chance to draw even with a double minor advantage but weren't able to solve starter Reid Dyck. The Broncos would add to their lead late from the point as Owen Pickering would get his 9th sneaking a shot past Tigers goaltender Beckett Langkow (Vegreville, AB) at 18:41. Medicine Hat would outshoot Swift Current 12-10 but wouldn't be able to get on the scoresheet after 20.
The Broncos would continue their scoring success on the man advantage as Josh Filmon would make pay dirt at 4:09 to increase the Swift Current lead to 3-0 and they're done as on a delayed penalty at 9:11 Grayson Burzynski is able to solve Langkow to give the Broncos a 4-0 lead. The Tigers finally figure out Broncos starter Reid Dyck on their 6th power play of the night as Tyler MacKenzie (Red Deer, AB) scores his 16th re-directing a Tomas Mrsic (Surrey, B.C.) point shot and Bogdans Hodass (Jelgava, LAT) with with 48 seconds left in the 2nd to give the Tigers life heading to 3rd period.
But it would be the power play of the Broncos returning to the fold once again as Filmon would register his 2nd of the night and 39th of the season from Mathew Ward & Pickering at 3:18 to give the Broncos a 5-1. The Tigers would get one back late in the third on strong keep-in by Josh Van Mulligen (Medicine Hat, AB) and Andrew Basha (Calgary, AB), feeding Oasiz Wiesblatt (Calgary, AB) his 22nd of the year with 5:23 left in regulation to cut the Bronco lead to 5-2.
Despite the Tigers outshooting Swift Current 34-18, the Broncos would drop Medicine Hat's record to 24-24-8-1 while moving themselves into 7th in the Eastern Conference Standings with a 27-27-1-2 record. With the loss the Tigers do hold the final playoff spot in the East sitting in 8th just one point ahead of Calgary in 9th heading into Tuesday's action against Winnipeg. Special Teams sees the Tigers go 1/7 on the man advantage while the Broncos were 3/6.
Next up is a tight turn in a busy week for the Orange & Black as they'll welcome the Winnipeg ICE for the final time this season at home Wednesday Night at Co-op Place. Puck-drop is set for 7 PM.
