Swift Current Broncos News Release

RED DEER, AB - The Swift Current Broncos (6-22-1-2) were tied with the Red Deer Rebels (12-17-0-3) 1-1 through 40 minutes, but a turnover at the blue line turned out to be the difference in a 3-1 loss.

Red Deer opened the scoring just 1:51 into the game as the Rebels took advantage of a failed clear. Zak Smith took the pass in the left circle and lifted it over the shoulder of Isaac Poulter for the Teddy Bear Toss goal.

Once play resumed, it took the Broncos a little while to find their rhythm before getting some chances on net late in the period, but went into the intermission down 1-0.

The Broncos started the second on the power play after Ethan Sakowich cleared the puck over the glass with a second left in the first.

On the man advantage, Tyler Smithies sent the puck to the front of the net and Sam McGinley fired it on goal. It appeared to go off the post before Smithies whacked at it and Byron Fancy covered it, but the play was reviewed.

After the review, it was called a good call and Smithies was given credit for the power-play goal, tying the game at one.

The game went into the third period tied at one, but only stayed that way for a few minutes.

Off another failed clear, the Rebels sent the puck down low to Jayden Grubbe who then centred for Cam Hausinger who beat Poulter with a one timer to restore Red Deer's lead.

The Broncos had another chance on the power play to tie it, but hit the post on one occasion and couldn't solve Fancy.

After some extended zone time in the Rebels end, Red Deer regained control of the puck and got the insurance marker when Josh Tarzwell jumped on a rebound off the rush to make the final score 3-1.

The Broncos now head into their much-needed Christmas break and will return to action December 27 when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers.
