Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (June 10, 2008) - Brockton native RF Eugene Julien's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning made the Rox 4-3 winners over the Ottawa Rapidz on Tuesday night; spoiling the return of former manager Ed Nottle. Brockton emerged from a 3-0 deficit to walk off in dramatic fashion in the series opener against the Rapidz.
Ottawa took an early lead in Nottle's much anticipated return to Campanelli Stadium. The Rapidz scored first on a two-run double by RF Pete Pirman off of Rox starter RHP John Kelly in the top of the second inning. They then extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third inning when 2B Jose de los Santos scored on a wild pitch. From that point forward, Kelly and Rox reliever RHP James Baker held the Rapidz to just two hits, and allowed the Brockton offense to crawl back in to the game.
Former Brockton High School standout Eugene Julien started and ended the scoring for the Rox. In the third inning, he led off with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch. CF Ervin Alcantara also scored in the inning on the very next pitch; a passed ball. The Rox tied the game in the sixth inning when 1B Francisco Lebron scored on a throwing error by Rapidz 2B Jose de los Santos. Julien drove in the winning run with 2B Melvin Falu at second base and one out. He finished with three hits on the night.
RHP James Baker recorded the victory for Brockton with two solid innings of relief. He allowed one hit, one walk, and struck out one to pick his first win of the season. RHP John Kelly did not figure in the decision and departed after seven innings. He allowed three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out six.
Ed Nottle managed the Rox from 2002 - 2005 and was the manager when Brockton won the 2003 Northeast League Championship. This was his first game back at Campanelli Stadium since departing the Rox following the 2005 season.
Brockton and Ottawa meet again on Wednesday morning at 10:30 in School Day, presented by Harbor One Credit Union. Rox LHP Rolando Viera (1-2, 4.70 ERA) will face Ottawa LHP Fraser Robinson (0-1, 2.91 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 AM.
