Atlantic City Surf News Release

Atlantic City, N.J. - With the help of back-to-back, tenth-inning solo home runs by RF Jorge Moreno and DH Walter Young, the Sussex Skyhawks defeated the Atlantic City Surf, 7-4, in a Can-Am League game at Bernie Robbins Stadium on Tuesday night.

Atlantic City grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the second inning when RF Josh Burrus hit a one-out double, and later came around to score on a fielding error by Moreno. Sussex quickly tied the game up with Moreno's RBI single in the third.

The Skyhawks then took a short-lived lead in the fifth, on an RBI double by CF Ron Perodin. The Surf responded with three in the bottom half of the frame, via a two-run double by SS Anthony Granato and an RBI double from 1B Joe Burke, making the game 4-2.

Sussex came back with two in the sixth, courtesy of a leadoff home run by C Yohanny Valera and an RBI single by 2B Chris Brown.

It was all the scoring the game would see until the tenth, when Moreno and Young hit solo bombs off of Derek Barrows to lead off the inning. 3B Jay Yaconetti drove in an insurance run with an RBI single later in the inning. The Surf threatened in their half of the inning, putting runners on second and third with none out, but could not score.

Burke and Burrus both had 2-for-5 evenings at the plate for the Surf, while 3B Arturo Ledesma had his first professional hit, a fifth-inning single. On the Sussex side, Brown had a solid night, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Moreno, Perodin and LF Alex Frazier chipped in with two hits apiece for the Skyhawks, who won for the sixth time in seven games.

Adam Cox, Atlantic City's starter, received a no-decision, striking out six in five innings of work. Barrows (0-1) took the loss. Sussex starting pitcher Chris Snipp allowed three earned runs in seven innings of work, striking out nine, while Richard Lawyer (2-0) registered the win out of the bullpen with two innings of hitless relief. Matt Salvato earned his first save of the season for the Skyhawks by holding the Surf at bay in the tenth.

Atlantic City (10-8) returns to action Wednesday morning with the second game of the three-game set against Sussex (9-9) at 11:00 a.m. Rory Shortell (0-0) will make his first start of the season for the Surf, facing Gary Galvez (1-1).
