New Jersey Jackals News Release
Nashua, NH - After trailing 8-0 in the fifth inning, the Nashua Pride rallied to make it an 8-7 game in the ninth before first baseman Bryan Duplissie hit a walk-off home run off Jackals closer Rusty Tucker as New Jersey fell by a score of 9-8 on the road at Historic Holman Stadium on Tuesday night.
In the Nashua ninth, the Pride pulled within one when Jeremy Pickrell led off with a triple and scored two batters later on a one-out RBI single by Argenis Tavarez, who extended his hitting streak to eight games. Tavaraz was then picked off first base by Tucker. With two outs, Ismael Castro drew a walk, which enabled Duplissie to send a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left-center.
The Jackals opened up the scoring with four runs in the second inning. Following three straight singles to begin the frame, a bases-loaded RBI single by catcher Craig Maddox made it 1-0. Following an RBI groundout by left fielder Andrew Larsen, shortstop Casey Gordon launched a two-run triple over the head of Nashua center fielder Vinny Pennell to put the Jackals up 4-0.
In the fourth inning, an RBI single by center fielder Zack Smithlin and a two-run base hit from second baseman Marcus Sanders vaulted the Jackals to a 7-0 lead. A fifth-inning single by right fielder Ramon Nivar put New Jersey on top 8-0.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Nashua right fielder Denny Abreu led off with a home run to put Nashua on the board. In the sixth, the Pride posted five runs as they chased Jackals starter Isaac Pavlik from the game. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of second baseman Ismael Castro, who hit a three-run homer as Nashua cut the New Jersey lead to 8-6. That score held until the bottom of the ninth.
Tucker (1-1), who had allowed just two hits in seven innings of relief entering Tuesday night, took the loss as he blew his first save of the season. Newly-acquired German Melendez (1-0) earned the win in relief for Nashua, allowed two hits over three scoreless innings. Nicholas Suero started for the Pride but was pulled from the game in the third inning allowing seven runs on ten hits in 3 1/3 innings.
The Jackals and Pride are off tomorrow before finishing up the three-game series on Thursday morning at 10:35. Ryan Pacyna takes the hill for New Jersey. Catch every pitch from Historic Holman Stadium via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the pregame show beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
