Brockton Rox News Release
(Worcester, Mass.) - After besting the Worcester Tornadoes (3-7) 5-1 on a chilly night at Hanover Insurance Park, the Brockton Rox (8-1) are now just one victory away from equaling their best start in franchise history.
Julian Sampson (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, tossing five shutout innings, while giving up just two hits and striking out three. Holding the Tornadoes scoreless did not come easily however, as Sampson struggled with his control, issuing five walks.
The Worcester offense struggled once again to drive in base runners, stranding 12 more for a total of 33 men left on base in the series.
The Rox threatened Worcester starter Nick Serino (0-1) from the get-go and eventually broke through in the top of the fourth inning. Keith Brachold smacked his first home run of the season to lead off the frame and Sam Wiley followed three batters later with an RBI double, scoring Ryan Royster.
Serino lasted just four and 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on five hits, while walking and striking out four.
Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, the Tornadoes finally ended a14 inning scoreless streak on a sacrifice fly from Boomer Blanchard that scored Nick Salotti and cut the Brockton lead in half.
The Rox bats went back to work in the seventh, chasing reliever Kevin Cooper after an inning and 1/3. Melvin Falu opened the frame with a walk and was driven home two batters later by Brachold. Royster then tripled down the left field line, knocking in two runs and giving the Rox a four run cushion.
Cooper allowed two of the three runs in the frame and was replaced by Michael Gedman, who gave up one run on two hits, while recording just one out.
Brockton improved to 7-0 against the Tornadoes on Saturday night and will look for the series sweep on Sunday afternoon with Mike Smith (2-0, 1.42 ERA) set to toe the rubber. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. The road trip continues Tuesday, June 7 in Quebec City as Brockton travels north of the border for the first time this season.
