Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, N.J. - Kyle LaMotta stroked three hits, including a solo homer, and scored three runs and left-hander Alex Smith scattered just three hits over seven innings for his first win, leading the Newark Bears to a 5-3 victory over the New York Federals Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The win was the fourth straight for the Bears (6-4), while the Federals dropped to 1-9.
The Bears drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning. LaMotta had the first of his three hits on the day, an infield single, and went to second on an error. He moved to third on an infield out and scored on Tim Raines, Jr.'s infield out, the 12th RBI of the season for "Little Rock," a total that leads the Can-Am League.
The Federals tied the game with a run in the top of the third when Wilson Matos delivered a run-scoring single, scoring Stephen Pinto. It was an unearned run against Smith (1-0), who struck out four and walked two in his seven innings of work.
The Bears regained the lead in the third when LaMotta lofted a solo homer over the left field wall, the first home run of his professional career.
The Bears pushed the lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning, when Danny Santiesteban singled, moved to third on Todd Gossage's single and scored on Eric McGee's sacrifice fly.
Newark scored twice in the fifth, chasing Federals' starting pitcher and former Bear Trevor Marcotte (0-2) in the process. LaMotta keyed the rally again, leading off the inning with a single. LaMotta then stole second base. Jeff Toth walked. Daryle Ward doubled down the left field line to score LaMotta and Toth scampered home on a wild pitch, giving the Bears a 5-1 lead.
Trevor Pippin belted a two-run homer off Bears reliever Andrew Pluta in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Bears' lead to 5-3. Victor Gonzalez pitched a perfect ninth inning to gain his first save.
Other than LaMotta, the Bears received two hits from Santiesteban.
The Bears and Federals complete their five-game series with a special 11 a.m. first pitch Monday morning at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears will then take on the rival New Jersey Jackals for games Tuesday night at 5:35 p.m. and Wednesday at 11 a.m.
