Worcester Defeats Brockton for the First Time in 2011, 7-4

June 5, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Abraham Nunez had three runs batted in, putting the Tornadoes on top twice in the ballgame. The second lead he gave Worcester was enough to top the Brockton Rox 7-4 on Sunday afternoon in Central Massachusetts. Nunez had a two-run homer and an infield RBI single, giving the Tornadoes 4-1 and 5-4 leads respectively.

The Tornadoes drew seven walks in the game, all in the first four innings. Two of those baserunners scored the first two Worcester runs against Brockton starter (and pitching coach) Mike Smith. Smith didn't make it out of the fourth inning, but also didn't factor into the decision.

Ryan Crespi added a solo homer in the seventh inning to cap the scoring at 7-4. He scored two runs, having been plated by Nunez one inning earlier to give the Tornadoes a lead they would not relinquish.

Jimmer Kennedy picked up the loss for Brockton, pitching two innings, allowing two runs on six hits.

Ryan Walfield made his Tornadoes debut with 0.2 perfect innings, stranding Chris Valencia on third base in the seventh after he knocked Zach Zuercher out of the game with a one-out triple. Zuercher improved to (2-1) on the season, going 6.1 innings with two strikeouts, a walk, a walk, and four runs on 10 hits. Rick Asadoorian came on for the save, his second in as many chances this season. Albert Ayala inherited a runner from Mike Gedman, who walked the only batter he faced. Ayala retired the only three batters he faced, including two from strikeouts.

The Tornadoes have their first off-day of the season on Monday. Their three-game set with the Pittsfield Colonials begins with two 10:30am starts, one on Tuesday and one on Wednesday. Thursday's game will be a 7:00pm first pitch.
