New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - The Jackals spotted their starting pitcher, Isaac Pavlik, an early nine-run lead and the southpaw struck out 10 batters without allowing a walk as New Jersey defeated the Rockland Boulders, 13-1, on Sunday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.
After New Jersey starters had allowed 16 runs in five innings over the past two nights, Pavlik took the mound on Sunday and allowed just one run on four hits over seven innings. In three starts, Pavlik has struck out 27 batters and walked just two.
New Jersey opened the scoring with seven runs in the first inning. A bases-loaded sacrifice fly off the bat of catcher Myron Leslie made it 1-0. Two batters later, right fielder Jeremy Slayden ripped a two-run double to help New Jersey open up a 3-0 advantage. An RBI single by first baseman Kris Sanchez extended the Jackals' lead to 4-0 before New Jersey re-loaded the bases and shortstop Mike DeJesus cleared them with a three-run double to make it 7-0.
In the bottom of the second, designated hitter Mike Jones launched his team-leading third home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field following a Leslie single, to give New Jersey a 9-0 lead.
Rockland broke through in the fourth inning when an RBI double by catcher Todd Jennings made it 9-1, but the Boulders managed just one hit the rest of the game.
The Jackals put the game further out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. With newly-signed reliever Justin Ottman in the game for Rockland, New Jersey strung together five straight hits to begin the frame. An RBI double by left fielder Leonard Davis and an RBI single by pinch hitter Chris Anderson made it 11-1 before the Jackals plated the game's final two runs on an a Jones single and a Nick Giarraputo double.
The Jackals bullpen continued to dominate Rockland as Bobby Gagg tossed a scoreless eighth inning and New Jersey infielder Dan Betteridge retired the heart of the Boulders' lineup in order in the ninth in just his second career pitching appearance. Over the first three games of the series, the Jackals' bullpen has allowed just two runs in 15 innings.
Offensively for New Jersey, second baseman Argenis Reyes picked up his second four-hit game of the season, going 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, while Jones and Davis each collected three hits.
The Jackals and Boulders conclude their four-game series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium when New Jersey sends southpaw James Leverton (1-1, 2.38 ERA) to the mound against Rockland right-hander Bobby Blevins (1-0, 4.77 ERA). Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
