Brockton Rox News Release
(Worcester, Mass. - June 5, 2011) - On an afternoon of sun showers at Hanover Insurance Park, the Worcester Tornadoes (4-7) bested the Brockton Rox (8-2) 7-4 for the first time this season, ending the Rox head-to-head dominance at seven straight victories.
Rox starter Mike Smith (2-0) struggled with his control, walking seven while throwing 90 pitches in just three and 1/3 innings. Smith gave up four runs on three hits, including two RBI singles to Alex Nunez and a two run homer to Abraham Nunez that chased the righthander with one out in the fourth.
Trailing 4-1, Brockton fought back to the tie the game, collecting seven singles in the fifth and sixth innings. Jorge Jimenez and Sam Wileyeach provided two base hits and an RBI.
The Tornadoes answered immediately in the last half of the sixth, saddling reliever Jimmer Kennedy (1-1) with the defeat. Kennedy surrendered back-to-back singles to Ryan Crespi and Alex Nunez to start the inning and then RBI singles to Abraham Nunez and Mark Minicozzi, giving the Tornadoes back the lead, 6-4.
Jake Hale coughed up his first run of the season on a solo shot to Crespi in the seventh that capped off Worcester's scoring.
Zach Zuercher (2-1) picked up the much needed win for Worcester, lasting six and 1/3 innings while allowing four runs on 10 hits.
Tornadoes closer Rick Asadoorian (2) walked the lead off hitter in the ninth, but recovered to retire the next three in order, earning his second save.
Chris Grossman went 3-for-4 with a run-scoring double in the loss.
The Rox will take the day off Monday, before heading to Quebec City for a three game series beginning Tuesday, June 7. Prior to game one, the two teams will conclude a suspended game from June 1, followed by a full nine inning ballgame. The road trip concludes Thursday as the Rox return home to open a three game set against the Newark Bears on Friday, June 10.
