Brewers Collapse in 9th

The Helena Brewers (14-15) issued five late runs to give the Orem Owlz (19-12) a 7-4 win at Kindrick Field in Helena Sunday, ending their run of three straight wins against the Owlz.

Nate Griep made his first professional start for Helena, tossing two innings of shutout baseball. Griep allowed two hits and struck out one.

The Owlz took the first lead of the game in the fourth when Michael Pierson scored on the RBI single of Jeffrey Boehm. Boehm went 2-for-3 with the RBI, two walks, and a stolen base.

Helena responded immediately, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth. George Iskenderian and Dustin Houle contributed RBI singles to the inning off Joe Gatto. Gatto did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. He would pitch 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and striking out two. He would not receive a decision.

Carlos Belonis added a late homerun for the Brewers, giving them a 4-2 lead headed to the ninth.

Junior Rincon (2-2) came in for the save, but was unable to deliver. He would face eight batters, giving up five runs before his time was done. The Owlz cranked three doubles in the inning to give them a 7-4 lead headed to the bottom of nine.

Helena was able to get the bases loaded in the ninth, bringing the winning run to the plate, but was unable to convert. Monte Harrison would pop out to shallow left to end the game.

The Brewers and Owlz will face off in the third game of their four-game series Monday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
