Brett Stovin Returning to Blades for 2015-2016 Season
April 1, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
The Captain is back! That's the exciting news for the Saskatoon Blades, as Brett Stovin, who we all thought was done with his junior career after playing this season as a 20 year old, will return as the WHL's first ever over-overager.
"It feels so great to be back", said Stovin. "I thought I was out of junior eligibility, I'd accepted the fact I was probably going the CIS route, and now this great news."
Stovin is a bit of a pilot-project for the league. He'll be the league's only 21 year old player, and if all goes according to plan, it could become a regular thing.
"We're always looking at ways of enhancing the fan experience," said Blades President Steve Hogle. "When we found out Brett could come back, it was incredible. Our fans love him, he's well respected in the locker room, it's just great news."
There is a bit of a twist though - Stovin is allowed to come back, but he can't play a position he's already played for the Blades. Since he's been a full-time forward, and also filled in on the blue-line, the Captain will be strapping on the pads and taking over in the crease.
"He's a natural fit," added Goaltending Coach Tim Cheveldae. "He always leads the team in blocked shots. He's got great hand-eye coordination. He looks good out there."
"It went well in practice," said Stovin. "I used to play a bit as a kid, so to get this chance now, I'm excited. I'll work hard, that's for sure."
However, not everyone is happy about the return of Stovin.
"To be honest, I don't think it's right," said goaltender Nik Amundrud. "Brock Hamm and I have a good thing going. Stovin is supposed to be gone, and now he thinks he can come back and take our job? Come on."
"I just care about what's best for the team," added Head Coach and GM Bob Woods. "Brett is a leader, and I know he'll do well. Nik and Brock will have to work hard and push each other to see who the backup will be. I'm just happy to have the Captain back, and know there will be some leadership and veteran presence."
Stovin is currently playing a few games with Missouri Mavericks of the East Coast Hockey League, but say's he'll be with the Blades in training camp, ready to play goal and help the team win.
