Brendan Leipsic Scores Overtime Winner to Give Winterhawks 4-3 Win

Brendan Leipsic scored in overtime to give the Portland Winterhawks (47-9-1-2) a 4-3 win over the Vancouver Giants (15-44-0-0) Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in front of 7,757 fans.

Leipsic's goal came 49 seconds into the extra frame to give the Winterhawks a come-from-behind victory.

Vancouver scored the lone goal of the first when Carter Popoff scored 2:16 into the game.

The Giants made it 2-0 at the 14:50 mark of the second on a goal by Travis McEvoy, but the Winterhawks were able to break through at the 18:55 mark on Taylor Leier's 23rd goal of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1 going into the third period.

The Hawks got the equalizer 4:37 into the third when Nic Petan scored a power play goal to make it 2-2, and took their first lead of the game at the 12:25 mark on a goal by Paul Bittner in a goalmouth scramble. The Giants responded at the 16:01 mark on a goal by Cain Franson to even it at 3-3 to force overtime and set up Leipsic's winner.

Brendan Burke earned the win in net for Portland with 29 saves on 32 shots. Jared Rathjen took the loss for the Giants, allowing four goals on 35 Portland shots.

The Hawks are back on action Monday with a Presidents' Day matinee against the Spokane Chiefs at 3 p.m. in the Coliseum.
