
Braves Win Sixth Straight

Fort Mill, SC - The Richmond Braves defeated the Charlotte Knights 9-8 on Thursday night. The Braves, who have now won six-straight games, improved to a 67-50. Richmond is now a season-best 17 games over .500. Charlotte dropped to 53-66 on the season. The Braves remain three and a half games in front of the second-place Durham Bulls in the International League's South Division. The Bulls won 9-3 on Thursday.
Barbaro Canizares got things started Thursday with a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. The Braves went into the fourth inning with a 6-0 lead. But the Knights' center fielder Jason Bourgeois smacked a grand slam to bring Charlotte to within one run. Charlotte scored a run in the fifth inning that tied the game at six. The Braves and Knights each scored in the sixth that kept game tied, at seven. Richmond scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to take a 9-7 lead. Charlotte added another run in the bottom of the ninth but fell short, 9-8.
Barbaro Canizares collected three hits for the fourth-straight game. Canizares finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI. Brayan Pena was 4-for-5 and scored four runs in the win. Brandon Jones extended his hit-streak to 10 games and now has six-straight games with multiple hits. Jones was 2-for-5 and scored twice in the Braves' sixth-straight win.
Braves' reliever Jeff Bennett allowed two earned runs in three innings but picked up his second win of the season. Bennett is now 2-3 with a 2.97 ERA. Zach Schreiber pitched a scoreless eighth inning to pick up a hold and Royce Ring closed out the game to earn his first save with Richmond. Richmond starter Dan Smith kept Charlotte off the board until the fourth inning. Smith who didn't receive a decision in the game, is now 3-3 with a 5.49 ERA.
Charlotte reliever Carlos Vasquez, who allowed the Braves to score twice in the eighth inning, dropped his second decision of the season. He is now 2-2 with a 3.16 ERA. Kenny Perez, Ernie Young, and Jason Bourgeois each had a pair of hits in the Charlotte loss.
The Braves wrap-up their four-game series with Charlotte in a 7:15 p.m. game on Friday. The Braves are scheduled to send RHP Manny Acosta (9-3, 2.23 ERA) to face RHP Lance Broadway (6-6, 4.01 ERA). Richmond returns home on Saturday to begin a four-game series against the Columbus Clippers. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
