Indianapolis Indians News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Third baseman Aaron Herr and shortstop Paul Janish combined to go 4-for-9 with three homers, four runs and 11 RBI as Louisville rolled to a 16-1 victory over Indianapolis in front of 7,122 Thursday night at Louisville Slugger Field.
The Bats improve to 58-61 on the season and 31-31 at home, while the Indians fall to 60-57 overall and 28-32 on the road. Friday will be the Tribe's 263rd consecutive day with a record of .500 or better.
Herr turned in a 2-for-4 performance with a grand slam in the fourth and three-run homer in the seventh, while Janish recorded a 2-for-5 effort with a grand slam in the second. Herr and Janish became just the second tandem in Louisville franchise history and first since 1984 to blast grand slams in the same game.
Louisville cracked the scoreboard with a run in the first when LF Chris Dickerson smashed a double to right, moved to third on a fielding error and came plateward on 1B Joey Votto's sacrifice fly.
The Bats added five runs in the second. RF Jay Bruce led off with a single to right before 2B Jorge Cantu and C Ryan Hanigan walked to load the bases. Janish then cranked his first Triple-A homer of the season over the left-field wall. Dickerson followed with his ninth dinger -- a solo blast to right.
Louisville poured it on with four runs in the fourth and six more in the seventh. Herr's grand slam and 14th roundtripper highlighted the fourth, while his three-run bomb and 15th long ball keyed the seventh.
Votto (3-for-4, 2 R, 3 RBI), Dickerson (2-for-4, 3 R, 1 RBI), Cantu (2-for-4, 1 R) and Hanigan (2-for-4, 2 R) joined Herr and Janish in the multi-hit category for the Bats. All nine Louisville starters registered at least one base knock and one run in the contest.
RF Steven Pearce gave Indianapolis all of its offense when he crushed a solo homer in the sixth. The 24-year-old, who has gone deep in all three games of the series, is up to 29 dingers and 103 RBI this season between High-A, Double-A and Triple-A.
1B Brad Eldred managed the Tribe's only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with his first triple of 2007.
Bats RHP Richie Gardner (5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) earned the win, improving to 4-4. Indians RHP Marty McLeary (2.0 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 4-5.
Russ Johnson, who became the first Indianapolis position player to pitch this season, allowed just one earned run and three hits in 1.1 innings.
The teams wrap up the four-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Victor Zambrano is scheduled to make his Indians debut, while RHP Tom Shearn is expected to get the nod for the Bats.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
