
Braves To Retire Chico Ruiz Number 16

Richmond, VA- The Richmond Braves will retire the number of former player Chico Ruiz as part of Hispanic Heritage Day presented by Hardee's, Sunday, July 22 at The Diamond. The Braves will honor Ruiz prior to their game against the Toledo Mud Hens at 2 PM. Courtesy of Hardee's, the Braves will give a commemorative Chico Ruiz ball to the first 2,000 fans.
Ruiz played his entire 14 season career in the Braves organization. Ruiz played in Richmond in 1973-74 and from 1976 to 1984. He is second in Braves history in games played and is the all-time leader in at bats. Ruiz is fourth in Braves history in hits, third in triples, and fourth in doubles. He was a three time winner of the John M. Zwack III Memorial Award for community service. He also played in 43 big league games with the Braves.
Ruiz' number 16 will be the first player number ever retired by the Braves. The Braves current retired numbers are 23 for former manager Tommy Aaron and 42 for Jackie Robinson.
In addition to honoring Ruiz, the day will feature tributes to the contributions by Latin American players. There will be an exhibit featuring memorabilia of Latin American players and teams. There will also be a band performing Latin music on the concourse.
