TONIGHT'S GAME: Is the first of a four-game series and the third of 12 meetings; the first of six at The Diamond. The Braves are 1-1 vs. the Mud Hens. Richmond was 4-2 vs. Toledo at The Diamond last season. The Braves are 388-326 all-time vs. the Mud Hens. It is the 29th of 48 games vs. West Division clubs and the ninth of 24 at home. Richmond is 16-12 vs. the West, 5-3 at home. Game three of an 11 game, 10 day homestand (Richmond is 1-1). The Braves are in first place in the South Division by two and a half games over Durham.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Braves beat the Columbus Clippers 6-2 in a game delayed by rain Thursday at The Diamond. Lance Cormier pitched six innings and had two hits to lead the Braves to a split of the two game series. Columbus took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Brent Abernathy RBI double. The Braves responded with three runs in the home half. Pete Orr smacked a leadoff homer and Wes Timmons chased two runs home with a single. The Braves tacked on two runs in the fourth to open up a 5-1 lead. Cormier knocked in a run with a sacrifice bunt and Martin Prado produced a run with a single. The Clippers scored in the sixth on a Michael Restovich double and a throwing error. The Braves added a run in the home half on another Prado RBI single. The game was delayed for 46 minutes by rain following the sixth inning. The Diamond was without power for much of the afternoon due to an earlier storm. Cormier picked up his third win. Fruto took the loss. Prado and Timmons knocked in two runs each. Braves relievers Will Startup and Manny Acosta combined for five strikeouts in three innings.
AS THE ROSTER TURNS: The Braves released INF Graham Koonce, placed INF Jonathan Schuerholz on the DL, and sent RHP Rich Scalamandre to Double-A Mississippi. RHP Buddy Hernandez has been activated from the Temporary Inactive List. OF Brandon Jones has been promoted from Mississippi. Atlanta has optioned RHP's Joey Devine and Kyle Davies to Richmond. They will officially join the R-Braves roster upon their arrival. Jones was hitting .292 with 15 HR and 74 RBI and had 12 steals in 94 games with the M-Braves. He also played in the Southern League All Star Game. The Braves roster currently stands at 23 (11 pitchers, three catchers, five infielders, and four outfielders) with four players on the DL (Schuerholz, RHP Jonathan Johnson, LHP Dan Smith, and OF T.J. Bohn). Richmond has made 81 roster moves this season. 11 R-Braves have earned promotions to Atlanta. The Braves have used 47 players this season.
ON THE LEADER BOARD: The Braves lead the IL in ERA (3.55), shutouts (11), and fewest home runs allowed (61). Richmond is second in steals (97). Martin Prado is sixth in the league in hitting (.315). Gregor Blanco is tied for third in runs scored (60). Richmond is tied for the league lead in fielding percentage with Toledo (.983) and has the fewest errors (58). The Braves lead in percentage of opponents caught stealing (53-119 .445). Corky Miller leads the league's catchers in fielding percentage (.995) and caught stealing percentage (33-71 .465). Prado has committed only one error in 293 chances in 60 games at second base
BY THE DOZEN: Prado has a 12 game hitting streak (20-52 .385), the Braves longest of the season and the longest since Brayan Pena hit in 12 straight games last season. The last time a Brave hit in more than 12 straight games was in 2004 when Wilson Betemit hit in 15 straight games in June.
FIRST OUT OF THE GATE: The Braves have scored eight runs and sent 18 hitters to the plate in the first inning of the first two games of the homestand. The Braves have out-scored opponents 62-38 in the first inning this season. Their only better inning is the fifth in which the Braves enjoy a 63-31 advantage.
