Norfolk Tides News Release
July 20, 2007 - Columbus connected for five hits in a four-run second inning, helping to knock off the Tides 6-2 in front of 7,828 fans at Harbor Park Friday night.
Michael Restovich began the decisive inning with a double to right field, and one-out later Larry Broadway drew a walk from Norfolk starter Kurt Birkins (6-3) to put runners on first and second. Brent Abernathy followed with a line drive double down the left field line to put the Clippers up 1-0, and Brandon Harper then lined another double down the left field line, scoring Broadway and Abernathy to put Columbus up 3-0. Brandon Watson ended the scoring in the frame with an RBI single.
Restovich put Columbus up 5-0 in the third with a solo home run down the right field line.
Norfolk plated a run in the 4th inning on an RBI single by Val Majewski, and pulled within 5-2 in the 6th frame, thanks to a solo home run off the bat of J.R. House. House finished 3-for-3 with a walk in the contest, falling a triple short of the cycle.
Columbus scored the final run of the game in the 8h inning on a sacrifice fly by Abraham Nunez.
After struggling early, Birkins settled down, facing the minimum amount of batters after Restovich's home run in the 3rd. The southpaw allowed five runs on eight hits, snapping his four-game win streak.
John Lannan (3-1) earned the win for Columbus, yielding two runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work. Lannan did not issue a walk, striking out three.
Norfolk has now lost the first game of each of their last four series. However, the Tides have won or split each of the past ten series they've played in.
Norfolk and Columbus will square off again on Saturday night from Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:15. Garrett Olson (7-6, 3.46) will take the mound for the Tides in his first start since being optioned from Baltimore on Thursday. The Clippers will counter with right-hander Collin Balester (0-0, 3.00).
