Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster Barnstormers have acquired third baseman Travis Metcalf in a trade with the Fort Worth Cats of the American Association, it was announced today by manager Butch Hobson. The Cats will receive a player to be named later.

Metcalf, 28, signed with the Texas Rangers in 2004 and rose quickly through their organization after batting .291 with 22 homers and 94 RBI for Class A Bakersfield in 2005. The all-time Kansas Jayhawks home run leader reached the big leagues in 2007, making his debut on May 19. His first big league hit was a home run off Pittsburgh's Tom Gorzelanny in his sixth professional at bat on June 14 of that season. The right-handed hitting third baseman played a key role in a four-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners in July of that season, going 9-for-15 with five doubles and a triple. He hit a grand slam off Baltimore's Rob Bell in a 30-3 rout of the Orioles on August 22 and drove in eight runs total in that doubleheader at Camden Yards. The following August, he whacked two home runs in the same game against the Detroit Tigers.

Overall, the Kansas native has batted .249 with 11 home runs in 80 Major League games over the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

Since leaving the Rangers, he has played at the Class AAA level with the Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies organizations. Metcalf batted .296 with 10 homers and 76 RBI for Class Colorado Springs in 2010. The Dallas resident was batting .275 with Fort Worth.

"We're excited to add a player of his caliber," said Hobson. "He is an excellent defensive player and gives us another strong right-handed batter in the lineup."

His addition gives the Barnstormers 24 players on the active roster, one short of the Atlantic League limit.
