Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Bridgeport, CT-In one of the more bizarre incidents this season, the Blue Crabs saw their Saturday contest against the Bridgeport Bluefish stopped by rain with the two teams tied 5-5 with two-out and the bases loaded for the Bluefish in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Bridgeport got the ball rolling in the first inning as Southern Maryland starter Eddie Rodriguez surrendered RBI singles to first baseman Wes Bankston, third baseman Luis Lopez, and designated hitter Brock Peterson to give the Bluefish a 3-0 lead.
Centerfielder Jeremy Owens got the Blue Crabs back into the game in the fourth inning on a two-run homer over the leftfield wall to pull Southern Maryland to within one. It was Owens' team-high 12th homer of the season.
In the top of the fifth inning with Southern Maryland trailing 3-2, rain began to fall at a steady pace. The Blue Crabs got a two-run homer from third baseman Travis Garcia (11) to take the lead. With Bridgeport starter Pat Ryan having difficulty pitching in wet conditions Southern Maryland used three walks and three wild pitches to add an insurance run as Benjamin scored on Ryan third wild pitch of the inning to give the Blue Crabs a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning the rain continued to fall harder. Rodriguez retired two of the first three hitters he faced and only needed one more out to possibly end the game as water began to accumulate on the infield. But a single and a walk loaded the bases for the Bluefish when catcher Luis Rodriguez came through with a two-run single to tie the game at five.
From there, Rodriguez walked shortstop Angel Chavez and centerfielder Prentice Redman stepped to the plate with a chance to possibly give the Bluefish the win. But with the infield rendered a quagmire due to the rain, umpires had no choice but to stop the game.
The game will resume tomorrow at 2:05 with the bases loaded, two-out, and the game tied a five and will go the scheduled nine innings. The regularly scheduled game will follow that and be nine innings long with Southern Maryland sending righty Michael Schlact (5-2, 4.12 ERA) to the hill against fellow right-hander Raymar Diaz (4-0, 5.28 ERA) for the Bluefish. Both games can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
