Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Arizona - Despite a strong performance from goaltender Steve Silverthorn, the Brahmas dropped their fifth straight road game on Friday night by the score of 2-1 in a shootout to the Sundogs.
Defenseman Jim Burichin put the Brahmas ahead 1-0 early in the first period with his fourth goal of the season. But before the period came to an end, Craig Macdonald beat Silverthorn to tie the score at one goal apiece heading into the first intermission.
Both teams played strong defense and got stellar goaltending throughout the second and third periods as the game remained tied for the final 41:19 of regulation. The two teams went to overtime, knotted up at one.
After neither team was able to get on the board in the extra frame, the Brahmas and Sundogs went to a shootout for the first time in five meetings this season. The Sundogs converted on two of their first three attempts as former Brahma Jeff Hazelwood and Damien Rycroft were able to put the puck past Silverthorn. But the Brahmas responded with conversions from Chris Moran - who was playing his first game for the team this season after being signed earlier in the week - and Brendon Hodge.
Kevin Petovello found the back of the net on the Sundogs' seventh shot, and Arizona netminder Scott Reid followed it up by stunting Chad Woollard to end the game.
Reid made 33 saves on 34 Brahmas shots to pick up his ninth victory of the season. Silverthorn stopped 38 of 39 shots in a losing effort.
Texas placed Alex Curran on team suspension before the game, as the forward left the team to pursue an opportunity unrelated to hockey.
The Brahmas and Sundogs will do it again on Saturday night from Tim's Toyota Center at 8:05pm CST. Texas returns to the NYTEX Sports Centre of Sunday, January 15 when it hosts the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at 5:00pm.
